General
Are life jackets available?
- Yes! We have a large selection of life jackets in different sizes for all ages, from the smallest children to large adults, in storage boxes on our dock
- Check with us in advance if you are a large group that needs life jackets, such as a school class or people with very limited swimming skills.
- The seating cushions for each boat are buoyant and can be used as buoyancy aids in the highly unlikely event of someone falling into the water.
- Life jackets are not mandatory on the canal, though highly recommended if you cannot swim.
Do I need any kind of driver’s license to drive BookaBoat boats?
No, you don’t need a boat license or driver’s certificate. Anyone aged 18 or over can drive our boats. It is of course important that all rules are followed on the water. You can find the rules here on our website, on an information sign on our jetty and on the back of the printed map on board each boat.
Is it possible to book someone to drive the boat for us, a captain?
We know that sometimes you can feel a little unsure about whether you can drive yourself when you go out for the first time. But it’s a lot easier than you might think! If we have staff on the dock and there is an available boat, it might be possible to take a test drive before you go out for real with your company.
We have limited capacity to provide captains for private bookings. Contact us if you want to inquire availability in case of a special occasion, such as a wedding or scattering of ashes.

What is the shortest booking time? What do you recommend?
Most people book 2 hours. The shortest time that can be booked is 1 hour, which can be good if you have limited time. In 1 hour you can take a trip on the canal around the old town at full speed. If you want to see everything that Malmö’s canals and harbor have to offer (such as Fiskehoddorna, Varvsbassängen and Dockan) it takes 2 hours. If you want to enjoy your trip more, maybe stop somewhere along the way for a drink or picnic, and enjoy your time on the water to the fullest, then 3 hours is perfect for you.
Are there any other costs in addition to the hourly rate?
No, the hourly rate covers the rent of the boat including use of seating cushions, life vests and blankets.
We do offer various add-ons to make your trip even more fun and memorable. These can be added when you book a boat on our website. You can also make additions afterwards by contacting us at the latest when you are at our dock.
How do I book several boats at the same time?
As a private individual, you can book a maximum of two boats per reservation. To book more boats than this for the same event, you need to make multiple bookings. You can use the same name and details for each booking. If you want to be sure that there are enough boats available at the chosen time before you book, please contact us.
Companies and organizations book through our Group booking page where you can read more about our group activity offers and conditions.
What are the different ways I can pay for my booking?
For private individuals, payment by card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express), ApplePay or MobilePay applies when booking on our website. If for some reason this does not work, we can also manually receive payment by Swish. During peak season we sometimes have staff at our dock who can accept payment with a card terminal or Swish. Contact us to check if we plan to have staff on site during the time of your booking.
Companies and organizations can pay by (electronic) invoice, visit our Group booking page for offers and conditions.
During which months can I take tours with BookaBoat’s boats?
You can rent our boats from April through October. Keep an eye on our website for exact dates when we open and close for the season.
What times of day is it possible to rent a boat?
You can hire a boat for tours between 9 am and 9 pm. The last start time is thus 8 pm. Some Fridays and Saturdays during peak season we may be open longer. For special requests for bookings at other times, please contact us.

What do we do if it rains?
Rain is unfortunately an inevitable part of our Swedish summer. If the weather is unsettled, there are a few different options for you:
- In the rear storage of each boat, there are disposable rain ponchos that you can use.
- Surprised by a shower when you’re already out and about? Drive under one of the 23 bridges in the canal and wait out the rain there. It can even be quite cozy to hang out there with good company while the rain pours outside.
- With our generous rain insurance included in all bookings, you can always rebook a tour if it rains when you go out or the rain is in the air/SMHI’s forecast promises rain. You will then receive a credit code that you can use to book a new tour in the future. Remember to contact us so we know that you want to use the rain insurance.
In our experience, as long as you are prepared for unstable weather and it is not both raining and cold, most people go out on their boat trip and have a pleasant experience anyway. There is no bad weather – only bad clothes
What is the BookaBoat cancellation policy?
It always includes free cancellation and rebooking up to 24 hours before the booked tour is due to take place. In addition, you get a rain insurance – free rebooking if it rains when you go out.
You can cancel a tour yourself via our website up to 24 hours before the start time.
You can cancel your booking yourself using the link in your booking confirmation. Otherwise, rebooking is done by chatting, calling 040-6434881 or emailing info@bookaboat.se. The rent for a canceled tour will be refunded as soon as possible, but may take up to 5 working days to process.
How do I change something about my booking?
No problem – just chat, email or call us and we’ll help you.
What should we do if we realise we are coming back too late? Does the boat with off automatically?
Our boats NEVER switch off automatically, only when you or we deactivate them.
You are expected to keep track of the time, how far from our dock you are and return the boat on time. Weather and wind can make you a few minutes late and that is no problem, no extra rent is charged for this. Our system automatically adds small gaps between each booking so there is some buffer.
As our boats are equipped with GPS, we can also see where you are at all times. If someone starts to be late without having contacted us, we check on the map that they are on their way back, otherwise we call back to check what happened. Always let us know if you want to extend an ongoing trip.
Where is the BookaBoat dock and boats located?
Our dock is located opposite Malmö Live, next to the pedestrian bridge from the old town to Clarion Hotel & Congress Malmö Live. The closest street address is Norra Vallgatan 93.
Where can I drive the boat, is there a map on board?
Yes, of course there is a map. You also get it when you book, and on a sign on the dock and in each boat. If you can’t resist, you can download it here.
How is the time we are out calculated?
The time starts counting from the moment you activate the boat. If there is a boat available before you, you can activate the boat up to 15 minutes before your booked time. When you are done and deactivate the boat, you will receive a summary showing how long you have been out. Please note that no extra rent is automatically deducted for late returns, but we will first check the reason for the delay with you. Please note that if you are late for your own reason, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to run the full length of your original booking (but we will of course do our best to help you).
Can I extend an ongoing boat trip?
Yes, it is possible if no one booked the boat after you. Contact us via chat on Messenger or call our service number 040-6434881 and we will help you. Please note that you always pay full price (690:-/790:-) for each extra hour when you extend an ongoing trip. So you benefit from booking a longer trip right from the start. Usually we can easily send you a payment link directly during the tour.
What happens if I return the boat very late?
In case of very late returns (more than 15 minutes) without a valid reason, we reserve the right to charge extra for your booking. We will first consult with you, the customer, about the reason for the long delay, in case there is a reason beyond your control that caused the delay. If we decide to request an additional payment, you will be informed of this and the reason(s) why we feel entitled to do so.
If a late return clashes with a subsequent booking, we also reserve the right to claim the full cost of the subsequent booking from the delayed customer, if this person chooses to cancel their booking due to the delay.
As a renter, you accept these terms when you book a boat with us.
The boats
Can my dog join us on the boat?
Absolutely, we like dogs and dogs like our boats! We just ask you to make sure that you leave the boat cleaned from dog hair (brooms are available on the dock), and that the dog does not sit on the cushions or blankets. Please note that we do not have any life jackets for dogs, you need to bring it yourself if you wish.
How many people can be on a boat?
The boats are licensed and insured for up to 12 people (1250 kg) and are very spacious. If you are adults only, we recommend a maximum of 9-10 people. If you have a lot of picnics and drinks with you, our recommendation is to be even fewer. For safety reasons, no more than 12 people are allowed on board, in which case you will need to book another boat.
No exceptions are made to the rule of a maximum of 12 people (infants, children, adults) per boat.
How long does the battery last on a boat?
On a fully charged boat, the batteries last for 14h. This is more than enough as we are only open 12 hours a day. The boats are also continuously charged when they are moored at the dock and plugged in. Each boat has a display that shows the current charge (voltage). Since the boats are connected to the internet, we can also see the charge remotely and are automatically alerted if it risks becoming very low.
How fast do the boats go?
The speed of the boats is limited to 4 knots, i.e. about 7.5 km/h. This is roughly equivalent to a brisk walking pace. The maximum speed in the canals of Malmö is 5 knots.
Is it difficult to drive a BookaBoat boat?
No, our boats are very easy to handle as they are designed to be as user-friendly as possible. Anyone can use them without any special knowledge. The speed control makes the boat go forward or backward. The large wooden rudder is used to turn right and left. When you dock at the pier, you use carabiners to secure the boat, no need for difficult knots.
Can we dock at other piers along the canal?
Yes, there are. There are some public jetties that you can temporarily dock at, where you can use the boat’s carabiners to attach the boat to rings that are placed. There are also regular ropes if there are no rings. You can pause the boat via your phone (power off) but please note that the time of your reservation is still ticking. For safety reasons, we ask you to keep an eye on your boat at all times if you dock somewhere. Mooring places are marked on the map provided in each boat.
What can I do if the boat has difficulty reaching a higher speed?
If the boat suddenly slows down a little, and the rudder starts to vibrate a little, something may be stuck in the propeller. This is rare but normal and can happen to any boat with a propeller. Just take it easy. Usually you can solve this by running the boat backwards at full speed for up to 10 seconds, this activates a cutting mechanism (propeller blade) that will tear apart plastic bags and the like that may be stuck. Try it a couple more times if it doesn’t work on the first try. If you are near a dock, you can dock there and see if you can see with the naked eye if something is stuck in the propeller. If this still does not solve the problem, you can call us at 0406434881 and we will help you. There are stowed gear in all boats and on our jetty for trickier cases.
Are there different boat models and sizes?
Yes, our most common model is called Classic and is a proven canal boat developed and manufactured in Holland. In our fleet we currently have 9 such boats.
We also have a Lounge boat which is more spacious with a long table. The table can be removed completely or the front part folded down to form a lounge area at the front of the boat. We have a lounge boat
We also have two water bikes. These are like spinning bikes but on the water with a propeller and two floating pontoons.
All our boats take a maximum of 12 people, the water bikes 1 person per bike.
