We know that some people feel a little bit insecure about driving a boat on their own for the first time. But it is easier than you might think! Sometimes we have staff at our jetty and you are more than welcome to stop by and make a small test-drive in advance of your booked trip.
Unfortunately we have a limited amount of time available to act as captains for trips. In some very special circumstances we might be able o help out, like for a weeding or a funeral where relatives want to scatter ashes. -

What is the minimum duration of a boat trip? What do you recommend?
Most people book 2 hours. The shortest duration is 1h which can be suitable if you have limited amount of time. That is enough to take a trip on the canal around the inner part of town, and e.g. pop into Suellshamnen. If you want to see all that Malmös canals and harbour has to offer, we recommend at least a 2 hour trip. Do you want to spend time relaxing on the water, moor somewhere to enjoy drinks or a picnic, or just take it easy, 3 hours is the perfect choice for you.

What happens if it rains?
Rain is unfortunately a given part of a typical Swedish summer. Whenever the weather is unstable you have a few options:
-In the storage compartment in the back of every boat there is a supply of rain ponchos.
-Surprised by a rain shower when you already out and about? Head in under any of the 23 bridges in the canal and wait for the rain to stop from there. It can even be quite enjoyable to spend time with your company there while the rain trickle down outside.
-With our generous rain insurance which is included in all bookings you are always free to reschedule your trip to another time if it rains when you are about to depart or if the weather forecast from SMHI, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, promises rain. In either case you will be given a voucher code that you can use to book a trip in the future instead. Please remember to contact us if you want to make use of the rain insurance.
Our experience is that as long as you are prepared for unstable weather and that doesn´t both rain and is cold you can have a pretty nice trip anyway. Remember – there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing. -
What is the BookaBoat cancellation policy?
You can always cancel or rebook your trip up until 24h before departure, free of charge. Thanks to the rain insurance included in all bookings, you can also reschedule your trip if it rains at your starting time.
You can yourself cancel a booking through our website up until 24h defore scheduled departure.
Rebooking or cancellation can otherwise be made by chat, phone +46406434881 or email info@bookaboat.se. The rent for a cancelled tour is returned as soon as possible but can take up to 5 workdays to process.
-
How do I change anything in my booking?
No problem – just chat, email or call us and we will happily help you out.
-
When will my booking deposit be released?
- The deposit will only be used in case you request to extend your trip (most common use), return it much too late, return it very littered or in worst case have caused damage to it.
- Your deposit is returned manually by us as soon as possible, usually the same day or the next.
- However, please note that it can take up to 5 working days until it is visible in your account, depending on how fast the payment provider and your bank processes our request.
- In the very rare cases of a negative instance as the ones described above, we always contact you as a customer to check if there are any natural explanations to what has happened nefore we retain part of or the whole deposit depending on the severity of what has happened.
-
What do we do if we are running late? Will the boat shut down automatically?
Our boats are NEVER deactivated automatically but only when you or we manually shut them down.
You are expected to keep track of time, how far far from our jetty you are and return your boat on time. Of course the weather and such can make you a couple of minutes late and that is not a problem, no extra rent is charged for this. Our system automatically puts small buffers in between bookings
Since our boats are equipped with GPS we can always check were you are. If someone is starting to run late without contacting us, we check on the map that you are on your way back. Otherwise we will give you a call to check whats up. Always contact us if you want to extend an ongoing trip. -
Where is the BookaBoat dock situated?
Our dock is located next to the Malmö Live building complex. The closest street adress is Norra Vallgatan 93.
-
Where can we sail, is there a map available?
Yes there certainly is. You get it in the confirmation email, it is also available on a big sign at our jetty and in every boat. If you want to see it now you can download it here.
-
How is the used up trip time calculated?
The rental time is started once you activate the boat from your phone. If you are early and the boat is available you can depart up to 15 minutes earlier than your booked time. When you return and deactivate the boat a summary will be shown on your phone. Please note that no extra rent is ever charged automatically for late returns, we always contact you first to check the cause for your delay. Please note that if you are late to depart because of your own fault, we cannot guarantee you can drive the full original trip length (but we will do our best to help you out)
-
Can I extend my reservation during my boat trip?
Yes, if the boat is not already reserved after your time slot ends. Contact us by Messenger chat or phone +46406434881 and we will help you. Please observe that for extensions you pay the normal hourly rate (SEK 590/690). I.e. you benefit from booking a longer trip already from the beginning. Payment for extensions are as default deducted from the safety deposit.
-
What happens if I return the boat very late?
For very late returns (more than 15 minutes) without valid cause, we keep the rights to retain the safety deposit for your booking. We always first check with you as a customer if there is a natural cause outside of your control that resulted in the delay. If we decide to retain the deposit you will be informed about this and our reasoning for this.
If your returning the boat too late interferes with another customers reservation, we also reserve the right to charge the full amount of the next party´s booking, should the next party choose to cancel their booking due to your late return.
By booking a boat with us you accept these terms.

-
Can I bring my dog on the boat?
Definetively, we like dogs and dogs like our boats! We kindly ask you to make sure to leave the boat as free of fur as possible (cleaning stuff is available at our jetty), and not let the dog sit on the boat cushions.
If you require a life jacket for your dog you have to bring that yourself. -
How many people are allowed on a boat?
The boats are licensed and insured for up to 12 persons (1250 kg) and very spacious. If you are only adults we recommend not to be more than 9-10 people. If yoo have a lot of picnic with you, consider to be even fewer per boat. For safety reasons, sailing with more than 12 people is not allowed; in that case you will need to book an additional boat.
No exceptions are made for the rule of maximum 12 human beings (infants, childs, adults) per boat.
-
How long does the battery of the boat last?
On a fully charged boat the batteries last 14h. This is more than enough since we are only open 12h a day. Whenever the boats are in the dock during the day they are also being charged. On each boat there is also display that shows the current charge (voltage) of the batteries. Since the boats are online to the internet we can also monitor the charge remotely and get automatic alarm if the level is getting low.
-
How fast can the boats go?
The boats can go up to 7,5 km/h (approximately 4 knots). This is comparable to quick walking pace. The maximum allowed speed in the Malmö canals is 5 knots.
-
Is it difficult to drive a BookaBoat boat?
No, it is very easy to drive a our boats. The boats are designed to be very user friendly so anyone can use them without any special skills. With the speed throttle you are able to drive the boat forward and put it in reverse. With the big wooden helm you can steer the boat to the right and left. The boat is moored to the dock with carabiner hooks so you don’t need to tie any knots.
-
Are there other jettys where we can moor in the canals?
Yes, there are some public jettys where you can moor temporarily using the carabiner hooks on the boat and attach them to rings on the jettys. There are also ordinary ropes if no rings are present. Via your phone you can temporarily pause the boat (shut off the power) but be aware the time for you booking is still running. For safety reasons we ask you to never leave the boat out of your sight. Mooring places are marked on the map that is available in every boat.
-
What can I do when the boat doesn’t seem to be able to pick up speed?
If the boat suddenly runs a little bit slower and perhaps the rudder is vibrating a little, this probably means there is something caught in the propeller. This is rare but fully normal for all boats with a propeller. Just relax. You can usually solve this problem by putting the boat in full power in reverse for 10 seconds. This will activate a cutting mechanism that will shred any plastic bags or other object that may have got stuck there. If it doesn´t work on the first attempt, try it a couple of more times. If you are close to a jetty you can moor there and see if you can see anything in the propeller from the jetty. If the problem persists you can call us at +46406434881 and we will help you out. There are tools tucked away both in the boats and at our jetty for the tricky cases.
-
Are there different boat models available?
Yes, our common model is named Classic and is a well proven type developed and manufactured in the Netherlands.
We also have a Loungeboat, which is more spacious and with a big table. The table can be completely removed or the front part can bed folded down to form a lounge sections, We have one Loungeboat.
We also have two waterbikes. These are like spinning bikes but with a propeller and two pontons.
All our boats have a amximum capacity of 12 persons, and the waterbikes 1 person per bike.

How many people are currently allowed on a BookaBoat boat?
12 people (since July 1st 2021). Renting one ur boats is considered a private gathering. Restrictions communicated by the Swedish government body for national health issues (Folkhälsomyndigheten) allow a group larger than the maximum capacity of 12 people that our boats have since July 1 2021. If possible, only sail with those you currently live with. Don’t bring guests that are part of a risk group.
-
Do you keep the boats clean?
We clean the boats at the start of each rental day, and have placed spray bottles with soap water at the dock. Use the soap water before and after your trip to keep the boats clean between trips.
-
What else should I think about?
Keep 1.5 metres of distance between yourself and other guests. Give each other enough space to go on board and leave the dock without crowding. If you need to wait for a while before or after your trip, there is enough space on the platform to the right of the gangway.
-
